What it is
Claude is a family of large language models made by Anthropic. It reads and writes text, reads images and documents, writes and reviews code, and can call tools that a developer defines. The family comes in sizes: larger models for harder reasoning and writing, smaller ones for fast, cheap steps. Each generation is released under a version number, so an application can pin the exact model it was tested against.
Developers reach Claude through the Anthropic API or through cloud platforms, including Amazon Bedrock. The same model can stream its answer token by token, return structured output, and work in a loop with tools, which is what turns a chat model into an agent. Pricing is per token, split between input and output, so the cost of each answer can be worked out exactly.
How I use it
- Radar, the help assistant inside Rental Pilot, runs on Claude through Amazon Bedrock. It answers from the help guides and files a problem report only after the person says yes.
- Assistants on three company websites answer visitors from each site's own content. Repeat questions get a saved answer at no cost, and every question reaches a person.
- Lend Pilot uses Claude to pull structured data out of pay stubs, NOAs and statements. Qualification and the B-20 stress test stay in deterministic code.
- Ask my agent on mervinc.com is Claude Sonnet on Bedrock with five small tools, and five Claude agents build a mini app on the build page while you watch.
- Every deployment has a budget, a guardrail and a person who sees what it said.
Claude is the right tool when a job is mostly reading and writing: answering from a set of documents, pulling fields out of paperwork, or writing code under review. I reach for it because it follows instructions closely, handles tools well and is available inside AWS through Bedrock, next to everything else I run. I keep it away from arithmetic that matters. In a regulated business, a number a model guessed is a liability, so the math stays in code.
Questions
Can Claude be used safely in a business application?
Yes, if it is given a narrow job and checked. I put a guardrail in front of it, cap daily spend, log every question and keep anything regulated, like mortgage qualification, in deterministic code.
Does Shawn Mervin build Claude integrations for clients?
Yes. I run Claude in Rental Pilot, Lend Pilot and on three company websites, and I build the same kind of assistant or document reader for other businesses.
Should Claude do the calculations in a lending or billing system?
No. I use it to read documents and fill in fields, and leave every calculation to code that gives the same answer every time and can be audited.
