What it is

GarageBand is Apple's music creation and audio recording app for macOS, iPhone and iPad. It records voice and instruments, offers a library of loops and software instruments, and lays everything out on a multitrack timeline. It is free on Apple devices. It also includes guided lessons for learning piano and guitar.

It is a simpler sibling of Logic Pro, and projects can be opened in Logic when they outgrow it. For non-musicians it is a practical way to record a voice-over, clean up levels, add a music bed or cut a short audio clip without buying a full digital audio workstation.

How I use it

  • Part of the photo, video and sound side of my work, done in-house.
  • Sound for promo pieces and highlight reels.
  • Quick audio tasks without bringing in an outside studio.

GarageBand is the right tool for straightforward audio: a voice-over, a music bed or a short clip, where a full studio app would be more than the job needs. I keep it in the toolkit because sound is part of the in-house video and media work, and it is already on every Mac.

Questions

Is GarageBand good enough for professional audio?

For voice-overs, music beds and simple edits, yes. Bigger mixing jobs usually move to Logic Pro, which opens GarageBand projects directly.

Do you handle sound for the videos you make?

Yes. Photo, video and sound are all part of the in-house visual side of my work.

Got an operation that's outgrown its spreadsheets?

Tell me what your business does and where it's jamming up. If I'm not the right person for it, I'll say so and point you somewhere better.
